Type specimen
RESEARCH
In my research phase for the Type Specimen Booklet, I explored Pinterest for inspiration. Diving into the realm of typography, I found myself captivated by compositions that transformed type into artwork. Given my proficiency in Photoshop and Illustrator, I was naturally drawn to the creative possibilities these tools offered for manipulating both type and images.
With research, a compelling concept emerged: the idea of showcasing the versatility of a single typeface. I was inspired to demonstrate how a typeface, inherently beautiful on its own, could be transformed into something entirely new and captivating. This exploration not only highlighted the font's charm but also illustrated its potential for artistic metamorphosis.
TYPE & COLOR STUDIES
As seen from my initial sketches, I grappled with the decision between selecting Baskerville and Futura, two fonts that possess distinct characteristics. Baskerville exudes an air of elegance and vintage charm, whereas Futura embodies a sleek, modern aesthetic with its geometric sans-serif design.
Ultimately, I opted for Futura, driven by its contemporary appeal and the creative possibilities it offered for crafting futuristic artwork. The expansive font family of Futura gave me greater artistic freedom. This choice also went seamlessly with my color palette selection, as I aimed to strike a balance between eye-catching visual elements and that complemented the sleek and modern sensibilities of Futura.
During the critique phase, my three completed compositions received an overwhelmingly positive response. My peers found my designs to be both captivating and refreshingly unconventional, setting them apart from the typical type specimen booklet – a response I considered favorable.
The bulk of the feedback and recommendations focused on refining the spacing and consolidating the most impactful pages into a cohesive whole. This thoughtful input was integral to shaping the final design, which, in retrospect, I believe greatly benefited from these adjustments.
While I acknowledge that there's always room for further refinement, I take immense satisfaction in how my creative vision evolved and manifested in the final product.
